Sycamore is the DeKalb County seat, about 35 minutes west of my shop in Campton Hills. The historic downtown sits on the city water utility, while properties on the edges and out toward the rural roads run on private wells. Either way, hard water is the through-line.

The City of Sycamore operates its own utility from deep wells.
- City water hardness runs in a similar range to Genoa and the western Kane County towns — moderately to genuinely hard depending on the neighborhood. A standard salt-based softener handles it.
- Iron and manganese show up occasionally, more on private wells than on the city system. Treatable with a separate filter when needed.
- Private wells outside city limits typically run harder, often with iron and manganese on top. Most rural homes need a softener and a separate iron filter.
