Local water in Genoa
The City of Genoa runs its own water utility from deep wells. Outside the city limits, most homes are on private wells.
- City water is moderately hard, typically 14–20 grains. A standard softener handles it; without one, scale shows up on water heaters and fixtures.
- Private wells outside town often test 18–25 grains and can carry iron and manganese. Most homes need a softener and an iron filter.
- Some deep wells in the area show measurable radium — worth testing for once if you’ve never had it checked.
Housing stock
- Downtown and the older streets in the original village grid, late-1800s and early-1900s small-town homes with the era’s plumbing complications: cast iron drains, galvanized supply lines, water heaters in tight basements.
- Mid-century neighborhoods along Route 72, mostly post-war construction with utility rooms that have decent floor space for tank or tankless work.
- Newer subdivisions on the edges of town and rural properties beyond, most on private wells with treatment systems that vary in quality and age.
